#ProTips – Swim Like Henri Schoeman

With a vast array of Age Group options available at our scintillating event weekends, it is time to start thinking about and planning your route to Super League Triathlon (SLT).

The experience doesn’t just start on race weekend, but over the coming months, we’ll be providing expert insight into training and racing from the very best in the sport!

This week, we start with our swimmer extraordinaire, Henri Schoeman. His ability in the water often sets up his success in races, not only giving him a speed advantage over other athletes but also utilising his technique to conserve energy for later in the race.

Henri’s top 5 tips to maximise performance in the water

5 Swimming Tips
  1. Feel for the Water
Spending more time in the water than usual will make you more comfortable and in turn, make you more relaxed during the swim leg.
  2. Speed Work / Intervals
Short repetitions of 50/100m at above race pace. Do this three times a week in the month leading up to the race.
  3. Swim with Others
Get a bunch of friends together for open water swims, practice swim starts with them, and also swim in a group. This is to make you aware of the close proximity of other athletes when you start a race.
  4. Warm Up
Incorporate some simple warmups 5 mins before swimming and racing. I use elastic bands which improves shoulder mobility and strength. Training and racing with warm muscles will help avoid injury!
  5. Focus on the Pull
Pulling is one of the critical components in a swim stroke, you want to avoid kicking as much as possible. Having strong arms in the swim and a proper pull technique will assist you with resting your legs and improve your swim time!
