Super League and Zwift are bringing triathlon back with the first major professional race of 2020 and a trailblazing new concept.

In a first for the sport, the SLT Arena Games will be an amalgamation of in real life and virtual racing and provide an immersive viewing experience that allows fans to get up close and personal with the best triathletes in the world and enjoy live power, speed and heart rate data from Zwift.

Developed as part of a new partnership between Super League Triathlon and Zwift, the global online training and racing platform, the SLT Arena Games will make its debut in the fabulous city of Rotterdam, Netherlands, on August 23 (1-3pm CET).

Jonas Schomburg

Jonas duly made it not only into Super League but broke through onto the world stage and is the leading short course male for the triathlon mad nation of Germany. His second place to Vincent Luis at RBC Super League Triathlon Jersey 2019 showed how far he had come and what a threat he can be with a strong all-round game. Alois Knabl

His tenth place in the World Series Grand Final last year helped him get selected for the Austrian team for this summer’s postponed Olympic Games.

Donald Hillebregt

The former swimmer is one for lofty ambitions and is aiming to muscle his way onto the Dutch Olympic squad for the mixed relay at the rescheduled Tokyo Olympics. That will likely put him in direct competition with Marco van der Stel, making their race within a race in Rotterdam a fascinating encounter, especially over the short and sharp distances on display. Donald grew up in the water but moved to triathlon at a relatively early age and has been progressing ever since. He is desperate for that one big breakthrough result on the world stage and the SLT Arena Games is a perfect showcase.

Australian star Natalie is going to be pushing the pace in the water given her swimming background. A competitive swimmer and cross country runner as a youngster she was scouted by star coach Jamie Turner and introduced to triathlon. A first WTS podium in Abu Dhabi in 2018 underlined her growing potential which came to the fore again last year when she secured a bronze medal for Australia in the ITU Mixed Relay World Championships alongside fellow Super League stars Aaron Royle and Emma Jeffcoat.

Georgia is often still classed as one for the future, but has proven to be very much one for now. Her meteoric rise to the top of world triathlon has been nothing short of sensational. After a successful junior career, Georgia quickly translated her talents into the senior ranks and by 2018 was a regular even against strong competition in the incredibly competitive female British WTS squad. After a string of podium finishes, including in her home race of Leeds, she finished third in the rankings at the end of 2018 and backed it up again in 2019. Maya Kingma

Reigning Ironman World Champion Anne etched her name into triathlon folklore when she ran an incredible 2:51:07 marathon in Kona to become the first German woman to take the title. Anne started life as a fantastic short course athlete with breakneck run speed and has finished second and third in the WTS Series as well as a Mixed Relay team champion. As a long course athlete she has also won Ironman Denmark, 70.3 Oceanside, Dubai and Lanzarote and finished third at the 70.3 World Championships.

Quinty Schoens

The 21-year-old is a rising star of the Dutch tri scene and was bestowed the ultimate honour when she was asked to deputise for Rachel Klamer as the Netherlands mixed relay team aimed for Olympic qualification in Edmonton last year. Schoens, a former gymnast who switched to swimming but has considerable bike power, held her own in that race and was given a taste for the big time, which she will get again as a rookie in a star laden field at the SLT Arena Games in Rotterdam. Schoens has kept her focus on sprint distance racing and had a breakthrough result when she finished fourth at the ETU Sprint Triathlon European Cup Final in 2019.

What are the SLT Arena Games?

The SLT Arena Games are an innovative new concept that blends in real life and virtual racing to deliver a new level of immersive viewing experience. They have been developed by Super League Triathlon in partnership with Zwift to add an exciting fresh element to the sport, with live data and in your face cameras to get closer to the athletes than ever before.

When is the first race?

Rotterdam will host the first ever staging of the SLT Arena Games on August 23 (1-3pm CET). The event will be the pinnacle of the Rotterdam Summer of esports, with a city that has already hosted an ITU Grand Final innovating again to produce the debut of the SLT Arena Games.

How will it work?

In a first for the sport, the SLT Arena Games will be an amalgamation of in real life and virtual racing and provide an immersive viewing experience that allows fans to get up close and personal with the best triathletes in the world and enjoy live data from Zwift.

The swim leg takes place in an Olympic sized pool while the bike and run disciplines are completed on Tacx Neo2T smart trainers and self-powered curved treadmills with the power and speed of the athletes turned into a visual race via Zwift’s amazing platform.

The TV broadcast will bring together the best of all these elements to produce a captivating event, with in your face cameras of athletes in an enclosed environment showing their effort and raw suffering like never before.

What format will the athletes race?

The Pros will be racing Super League’s unique Triple Mix format. That means three short, sharp and unpredictable stages that all feature swim, bike and run and offer no respite to the athletes with the added challenge that the order of the disciplines is shuffled each time.

There is a very short break of around a couple of minutes between the three stages, with each starting at a set time. That will reward those that finish quickest by giving them a longer rest period.

The 90 second rule will be in play after each stage with athletes who fall foul of it being eliminated.

The results of the three individual stages will combine to determine the overall winner.

What order will the races be in?

  1. The first stage will be swim-bike-run
  2. The second stage will be bike-run-swim
  3. The final stage will be run-swim-bike

What distances will the athletes race?

The swim legs are 200m, the bike 4km and the run 1km.

How will the point scoring work?

For each of the three individual stages in the Triple Mix format all ten athletes will be awarded points. It is as simple as 10 points for first place down to one point for 10th.

The cumulative totals at the end of the Triple Mix will confirm the winners.

What if there is a tie?

In the event of a tie the athlete with the best result in the final stage of the Triple Mix will be placed higher in the rankings.

Which Zwift course is being used?

The athletes will bike and run on Zwift’s Crit City course.

Who is racing?

Super League has recruited the biggest names in the sport with ten men and ten women competing. There are Olympic medallists, world champions and even a couple of up and comers in a stellar field.

Is there prize money?

Yes, the Pros will be racing for cash to add extra incentive to race at full throttle throughout.

What time is the racing?

The live broadcast runs from 1pm-3pm CET (12pm-2pm BST). The women race first followed immediately by the men.
