Athletes Women › Valerie Barthelemy
Valerie Barthelemy is the epitome of a resident of the world who has put on hold a promising career to pursue her triathlon dream. Born in the USA to Belgian parents, Valerie lived in France, Thailand and the USA while she was growing up. Her first sporting love was swimming, and Valerie was a decorated youngster who continued her competitive career at the University of Michigan, where she also completed Bachelors and Masters degrees in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering.
After a promising transition into the amateur ranks, Valerie turned pro in 2015 but continued to work designing boats and cruise ships. However, in 2017 she decided to leave her job and pursue her dream of competing at the Olympics. It was at this stage that Valerie decided to relocate to Belgium and to represent them. Valerie linked up with Antwerp Triathlon and Duathlon club ATRIAC and quickly showed her dominance in the region by winning the sprint and Olympic distance Belgian titles.
In 2019, Valerie joined The Triathlon Squad, overseen by coach Paulo Sousa, and enjoyed even greater success on the world stage. World Cup podiums in Chengdu, Cagliari and Miyazaki and better finishes in WTS events moved her into the world’s top 40 and secured her Olympic qualification.
Valerie is part of the Belgian Mixed Relay team alongside Marten Van Riel, Jelle Geens and Claire Michel, who took the gold medal at the Olympic qualification event in Lisbon in 2021.
She also took part in the first ever edition of the SLT Arena Games in Rotterdam in 2020 and secured a podium finish with third place.
