Wilde & Girlfriend Involved in Training Crash

Super League Triathlon athlete Hayden Wilde has been involved in a cycling crash whilst training in Australia just hours ahead of Saturday’s Mooloolaba ITU Triathlon World Cup.

Wilde’s girlfriend, Under-23s Belgian triathlete, Hanne De Vet was also involved in the crash and now understood unable to race in this weekend’s event.

Both athletes are understood to be fine following the incident and recovering from their injuries.

Wilde took to his Instagram page [@hayden_wilde] to break the news to his fans on Friday:

Not the sort of post I wanted to share…

Unfortunately late this evening Hanne De Vet and I were doing our easy training spin pre-race around the course to get prepared for tomorrow. Out of nowhere we were both taken out by two oncoming cyclists that had exited off the footpath onto the road without seeing us sending Hanne and I over the handlebars.

I’ve come away with a cracked helmet, buggered ankle and calf and a few cuts a bruises.
Hanne was unconscious for a few minutes. Fortunately her results came back with no broken bones but will stay in hospital for further checks tomorrow.

Wilde continued to say that the accident meant De Vet race day had gone and that he would make a final decision tomorrow (Saturday) on “whether to race or not.” before thanking everyone who had helped during the incident and fans for the messages.

De Vet also took to her Instagram to update her fans and thank Hayden Wilde and people who had helped:

Sadly won’t line up tomorrow for Mooloolaba World Cup. Involved in a bike crash this afternoon and hit my head pretty hard. Hope to be back on the road soon!

It is the second bike crash Wilde has been involved with in the last six months after the New Zealander came off his bike during a course recce ahead of SLT Malta last October sustaining cuts and bruises.

The injuries however did not affect the 22-year-old’s race performance that weekend as he finished second to qualify from his Group A semi-final before winning three SLT Jersey’s (Green: Cycle, Red: Run, Grey: Transition) taking third spot behind Vincent Luis and Kristian Blummenfelt in the overall weekend standings.

Everyone at Super League Triathlon wish Hayden Wilde and Hanne De Vet a speedy recovery and hope to see Wilde racing at the World Cup event this weekend in Mooloolaba.

The ITU event looks set to boast a packed elite men and women’s field with Georgia Taylor-Brown, Vicky Holland, Nicole Van Der Kaay, Alex Yee and Matthew Sharpe all set to be in action.

The World Cup event is one of the few sporting events still taking place following the global impact of coronavirus and the postponement of WTS Abu Dhabi last weekend.
