Australia secured the Super League Triathlon eSports Cycling Series title in a dramatic finale that saw Alistair Brownlee forced out midway through the race.
The British team crushed the point standings across the six sprint and KOM sections on Zwift’s Watopia course, but their hopes of landing the overall General Classification title were blown apart when Brownlee was forced out after 17.5km with a technical issue.
Though Gordon Benson was second across the line for GB – just behind the impressive James Cunnama – the Brits didn’t get another rider in the top ten while Australia’s Max Stapley and David Mainwaring finished fourth and fifth respectively.
With the combined times of the top two riders from each team across the finish line counting towards the General Classification leaderboard, it meant Australia extended their advantage to take the title by three seconds from Great Britain with Canada a further second back in third.
Australia picked up the $4,000 first prize for the Series, with Great Britain getting $2,000 for their troubles, on top of the $1,000 bonus for the race points win.
