Finding The Silver Lining – Richard Murray Misses Jersey Through Illness

Richard Murray will miss the start of the 2019/20 Super League Championship series through illness.

The 30-year-old, who’s impressive cycling skills saw the South African dominate the possession of the Green Jersey throughout the 2018/19 campaign, was struck down stomach flu following racing in Japan back in August.

Jersey will be the first time the veteran has missed a Super League race since the series was born back in 2017.

“I am gutted not to be there for the start of the season,” the South African told

“Having to pull out of Jersey was a tough one for me because I truly enjoy racing the formats and seeing all the SLT athletes back together.

“I was ill for about three weeks with bad stomach problems and it led to poor nutrition leaving me feeling weak and unable to train. The last month has been a tough ride, but getting back to full health is my first priority.”

Despite the disappointment, Murray admits he is optimistic about making his return to action at Malta in October and is looking forward to watching next weekend’s race action from the sidelines.

The 2014 Commonwealth silver and bronze medalist who impressed on the bike numerous times last season still believes the current SLT Champions will be hard to beat, but admits there will be a new challenge on who will go green.

“I still think Vincent Luis and Katie Zaferes will be the ones to watch along with Hayden Wilde. Katie looks strong again!” Murray said.

“I am not sure who will take her on this season, but perhaps one of the British females.

“It will be a sad moment to lose the Green Jersey, but yellow is my favourite colour.

“I think Hayden (Wilde) will grab green in Jersey, he will be one to watch. This will be the first time I will be watching SLT on TV. I am keen to watch from the sidelines, but I think seeing someone else go for the Green Jersey will fire me up to get well again.

“I’ll be working hard to try and make my return in Malta next month.”

Super League Triathlon return at RBC Super League Jersey this Saturday 27th & Sunday 28th September. Watch all the action online this coming weekend here!
