Jonas Schomburg has the ability to be the next Jan Frodeno, according to triathlon great Chris McCormack.
The 26-year-old German has been making rapid improvements after an unconventional start in Super League.
A then largely unknown Schomburg travelled with his dad to Super League Jersey in 2017 in the hope of convincing McCormack to give him a spot in the pro race.
That wasn’t possible but Schomburg was encouraged by McCormack to go to a Qualifier and earn his place, which he duly did, and he hasn’t looked back since.
A ninth place finish in the hugely competitive Tokyo test event last year marked Schomburg as one to watch and Super League co-founder McCormack thinks he has the assets to follow in the footsteps of German hero Frodeno – if he believes in himself enough.
He came across to our first ever Jersey event to ask for a start. He flew across with his dad and we just couldn’t do it. He opted to come to one of our Qualifier races, landed a spot and has gone from strength to strength. He is now the first German male pick for the Olympic squad.I thought his coming of age party was Super League Singapore and then he went on to do that Tokyo test event where he was just amazing and outkicked Jake Birtwhistle and was right behind Henri Schoeman. It was an amazing day.At times I feel Jonas has so much ability and talks himself out of things, but he’s like a snowball and when he gets momentum and a rhythm of racing he can do amazing things.I think the more racing he can do, the stronger and better athlete he is going to be. I think he is going to grow into his body and his talent. He reminds me of a young Jan Frodeno and that is a big call, because Jan Frodeno went on to win the Olympics and is probably the greatest triathlete to ever compete, but he has the same body structure and nervous energy as a young Jan Frodeno who just grew into himself and suddenly became a superstar.Jonas has all the ability to be a Jan Frodeono, if he has the confidence of Jan Frodeno.
