Here are the stories to look out for at the 2023 Championship Series Grand Final in NEOM.

Winner takes it all

The leading trios in the men’s and women’s field head into NEOM knowing that a win will secure them the title, so fate is in their race legs, pressure is on them… who will keep their head?

Léo Bergere leads the men standings with 29 points and one point separating each athlete from first to fifth with Jonathan Brownlee, Hayden Wilde, Alex Yee and Henri Schoeman all targeting victory in NEOM.

Yee and Schoeman have more ground to make up, but don’t discount them as a mixed up race could produce a surprise champion.

In the women’s field, Jeanne Lehair leads with 28 points closely followed by her fellow Eagle, Emma Lombardi (one point back), and the Shark of Kate Waugh (two points back) – these three know a win will be enough to claim the 2023 title.

Sophie Coldwell is the outsider in this group, on 24 points, and would need both Lehair and Lombardi to finish third or below coupled with a win to be crowned champion. Odds are against her with more work to do, but you can’t discount the Briti with her form of pulling out results in tough moments.

Brownlee’s time?

Two second place finishes in this Series, at London and Toulouse, places Jonathan Brownlee one point behind Léo Bergere. Brownlee is just missing one thing… a win!

It’s fair to say the mixed relay Olympic Champion and former World Triathlon Champion is overdue his ‘top step moment’ in Super League Triathlon.

Jonathan Brownlee will be targeting a win to secure the title

His last victory came in Singapore in 2018, beaten to the title that year by Vincent Luis. This series another Frenchman stands in his way with Bergere holding the one point advantage.

However, with Brownlee the more experienced athlete and favouring the Enduro format, could NEOM be the Brits moment to race to a famous victory and snatch the title away from Bergere?

Eagles battle for crown

Jeanne Lehair has without a doubt been one of the stand out athletes of the 2023 Championship Series.

Her fight through the field on the bike alongside a rocket boost run to the line delivered her an outstanding victory in London. Disappointment followed with a DQ in Toulouse, but the 27-year-old showed composure to bounce back in Malibu with a third place podium finish.

Jeanne Lehair and Emma Lombardi will go head-to-head for the women’s crown

Meanwhile Emma Lombardi has gone about her Series quietly with two podium finishes – a third in Toulouse and second in Malibu – putting her second in the women’s table, one point behind Lehair.
It sets up a mouthwatering race-off between the Luxembourg and French athletes in NEOM. Both are rising stars of the sport, both will also have an eye on the Olympics in Paris next year, both are sure to leave everything out on the desert course knowing a win will crown them Champion.

Talk about inter team rivalry, how will Tim Don coach this one?

Three-way fight for the team title

The battles between the team just gets better and better with each Super League Triathlon Series.

In 2022, one point was the difference between the Bahrain Victorious Scorpions and the RTP Sharks with drama at the finish line.

In 2023, three teams will battle for the Team title with the Sharks leading the Santara Tech Eagles by 11 points, and the Scorpions just a further seven points back.

It literally is all to race for to win the team’s title. Every position counts, and every athlete matters. All teams will need their strongest fields of athletes in play for this duel in the desert and NEOM gets set once again to host a classic Grand Final for the 2023 Championship Series.

Expect lots of tactics to come into play, with a big prize payout on the line.
