Kate Waugh is still trying to get her head around a ‘breakthrough season’ which culminated in her winning the Super League Triathlon Championship Series.

The rising British star has long since been regarded as one for the future, but has really come of age this year, with her Series triumph against the world’s best athletes marking her out as a star of the present.

Waugh took the title by finishing second to Cassandre Beaugrand in NEOM. She was level on points with Jeanne Lehair in the final standings but with the last result counting in the event of a tie topped the podium.

She said: “I’m over the moon. It’s been a breakthrough season for me so it’s the perfect end.

“The first run was really on and I didn’t feel that great so I thought it was going to struggle and wanted to fight at least for the podium. It was a bit of a rollercoaster.

“I came out of the second swim and didn’t feel my best but in the last run I decided to give it my all and not look back so I am really happy.

“If you were out front you were super exposed and pushing a lot harder than anyone else so when we had a bit of a gap and there were five or six of us away I wanted to push but not drag everyone with me so it was a very tactical game and I think I played it right.”

Waugh admitted she didn’t let herself think about winning the Series, but her late burst to take it in the final run of the Enduro format proved how much she wanted it.

She smiled: “A little part of me believed I could do it, but part of me felt I would be happy with a podium so I am buzzing.”
