Five Junior athletes are to get the chance of a lifetime after winning the opportunity to race with the Pros in Super League Malta.
As part of Super League’s commitment to give young triathletes a chance to make a name for themselves and experience life amongst the elite of the sport, three females and two males have won a place in today’s Semi-Finals.
The opportunity was earned thanks to their finishing positions in the Junior races.
Erin McConnell from Ireland along with Italian duo Beatrice Mallozzi and Bianca Seregni finished in the top four and jumped at the opportunity to take on the best in the business.
Mallozzi took out the race, which was two rounds of swim-bike-run, in a time of 33:49 with Sergeni eight seconds back in second and McConnell finishing fourth in 35:26. Constanza Arpinelli finished third but turned down her spot.
The trio now have a short break to compose themselves before the Pro racing begins this afternoon.
There were two spots offered up for the Junior Boys race which was fought over the same format and both of the top two jumped at the chance.
Nicolo Strada of Italy was first over the line in 30:49 with Alessio Crociani, also from Italy, just five seconds behind. Davide Ingrilli made it an Italian podium clean sweep.
Strada and Crociani will be attempting to follow in the footsteps of Simon Henseleit, the German triathlete who was victorious in the Junior race in Jersey and then won through to the Final. After having to turn down the chance to compete he has been invited back into the senior ranks for Malta.
There were also races for Youth Girls and Youth Boys.
The girls was won by Barbara De Koning (Netherlands) in 26:39, with Isla Britton (Canada) second in 26:47 and Lizzy Edge (Great Britain) rounding off the podium in 26:51.
The boy’s race was dominated by Great Britain who took the top four spots.
Daniel Dixon was the first over the line in 23:23. Hamish Reilly was second in 24:14 with Ryan Symington third in 24:18.
