Athletes Women › Sophia Green
Sophia Green grew up combining swimming with figure skating, competing for Scotland on the ice and almost gaining selection for the Great Britain squad. Having taken the tricky decision to focus purely on swimming, she then moved into multisport with a first triathlon in 2014 at the age of 14.
Born and brought up in Elgin, in the north of Scotland, Green is coached by Rob Bridges as part of British Triathlon’s Loughborough high performance centre, where she gets to train day-in, day-out with the likes of Sophie Coldwell and Alex Yee.
The 22-year-old has already posted some impressive results in her short career to date. After a first junior European Cup event in 2017, Green earned her first podium in Latvia the following year with a third-place finish in Riga – improving by one place at the same venue in 2019.
Moving up to the senior level didn’t stall her progress either. A successful three weeks of European Cup racing last summer started with a sixth place finish in Poland, followed by third in Ukraine and then victory in Portugal, which would help ensure her selection for Scotland’s Commonwealth Games squad – and the chance to race in front of a sell-out crowd in Birmingham.
Having relished the Commonwealth Games experience, finishing 17th in the individual contest and anchoring the Scots to fifth in the mixed team relay – their best result in the three editions of the event – Green took on the 2022 Championship Series as part of the SLT Eagles. She was 18th overall with a best placed finish of 11th in London.
With Britain one of the strongest triathlon nations in the world and Scotland producing its fair share of talent, Green says she has benefited from training with different groups and being surrounded by supportive athletes who have helped push her to where she is today. She adds: “My parents and coaches have been very supportive as well so combined these are the people that have had the biggest influence on me.”
Outside of competing, she is completing her degree in Sports Studies at the University of Stirling in Scotland and has recently also started coaching budding triathletes online.
