Athletes Men › Lionel Sanders
Lionel Sanders needs little introduction for most people who’ve followed triathlon over the past decade or so. In recent years, the Ontario native has become one of the biggest names in the long distance form of the sport with palmeres including 1 Long Distance World Title, 2 x Kona runner up, 4 IRONMAN wins, one time holder of the Long Distance Triathlon World Record and no less than 31 victories at 70.3 races.
One of Sanders’s most iconic racing moments came in 2021 when he took on German long distance triathlon legend Jan Frodeno in a man on man all out iron distance race at Zwift Battle Royale. Although Frodeno took the victory on the day, Sanders also eclipsed his own full distance PB, and one time world record, crossing the line in an astounding 7:43:28.
Although Arena Games Triathlon Powered by Zwift will be an entirely new challenge for 35 year old Sanders, Lionel has become synonymous, within the sport, with his unrivalled self motivation, fierce competitivity and never back down attitude.
As Lionel himself says
“From my experience, it appears that there are no limits, other than the self-created and imposed ones that only exist in your mind. I plan on spending my entire triathlon career testing this hypothesis.”
Known for being one of the strongest bikers on the triathlon circuit, and never one to count out, Sanders is sure to lay it all on the line in front of a home crowd at Arena Games Triathlon Powered by Zwift Montreal. As he has said of the challenge itself;
“Show me the vomit!”
