Athletes Men › Jonas Schomburg
Jonas Schomburg has one of Super League Triathlon’s most unique stories. The German turned up at Super League Triathlon Jersey accompanied by his dad and attempted to persuade SLT founder and four-time world champion Chris McCormack, to let him race with the pros. Macca’s response was to offer some advice to the youngster and enter him into a Qualifier event in Poznan, Poland. Schomburg went and smashed the race to earn a place in Super League and has become a firm favourite with fans ever since.
His race all out from the gun attitude has garnered him a lot of support, and his bike breakaway tactics have been a feature of Super League races. Schomburg has been training for triathlon since the age of 10. He started with the German team before switching allegiances to Turkey as a junior and then moving back to Germany again. His travelling lifestyle also included six years living in South Africa as a youngster.
Career highlights have included winning the Under-23 Aquathlon World Championship in 2016, fifth place at the World Cup event in Weihai and tenth at the Olympic test event in Tokyo in 2019. Having initially been coached by his father, Schomburg is now coached full time by Julien Pousson and lives in Grenoble, France, where he trains every day alongside the likes of Dorian Coninx.
Away from the sport, Schomburg loves to go kitesurfing and also speaks three languages.
