Jelle Geens is the Belgian star ready to run his way to the very top of triathlon. Jelle’s sporting origins were on two feet. Born in Zolder, Jelle got into running at an early age and found he had a natural ability. A multiple junior champion, Jelle also became Belgian 2000m steeplechase champion in 2010. Alongside his running, he had also become a fan of cycling and began racing duathlons at the age of 12. His prowess saw him gain a world ranking before triathlon became his passion.
Jelle had to make a lot of progress to make on the swim but proved to be a quick learner and just three years after taking up triathlon he collected a European Junior gold medal to underline his potential.
He began competing at the elite level in 2015, and his potential for the future was enough to get him a quick entry into the Rio Olympics, where he placed 38th. Since then, he has matured as an athlete and become a huge threat on the world stage. He became the first Belgian to win a WTS event when he took the win in Montreal in 2019. Jelle has also secured other top-level podium places, including Hamburg and 2021’s WTCS opener in Yokohama. He is also part of a formidable Belgian Mixed Relay team alongside fellow Super League Triathlon athletes Marten Van Riel and Valerie Barthelemy.
Jelle works with coach Joel Filiol and has moved to Girona to be part of a training group that includes Van Riel and Vincent Luis. He has combined competing with studying industrial engineering.
