Athletes Women › Ilaria Zane
Many top triathletes come from a swimming background – but Ilaria Zane may be the only one who has graduated from synchronised swimming. In her childhood in Mestre, Italy, Ilaria was focused on gymnastics before she found synchronised swimming. She fell in love with the sport and only knew triathlon as something her father did. However, after a bitterly disappointing result, she was encouraged to give it a go and raced for the first time aged 14. Ilaria still wasn’t entirely sure about it but over time found a burning passion for swim-bike-run that has powered her into the elite.
Ilaria signalled her potential in 2015 as she took the silver medal at the Under-23 European Championships and made the step up the senior ranks. Two years later she was mixing it with the world’s best and secured podium places in World Cup events. In 2018 she had top tens in Quarteira, Cagliari, Antwerp and Tiszaujvaros and took a first win at European Cup level a year later in Kecskemet.
The 2019 Italian national champion has delivered her best results in recent times over sprint distance races, including victory in the Kecskemet ETU Sprint Triathlon European Cup. She is also an experienced Super League athlete having participated in both the Arena Games Triathlon and been a regular in the Championship Series, including racing three of the four events in 2021.
Zane has raced Arena Games Triathlon four times previously, with her best finish being 5th place in Munich 2022.
She lives and trains in Milan.
