Fernando Alarza

Fernando Alarza has turned a promising junior career into becoming one of the most consistent performers on the world stage. Fernando was born in Talavera de la Reina in central Spain and his first love was for the water. From a sporting family, Fernando and his brothers were all competitive swimmers and he later branched out to embrace the world of athletics as well.

He was bitten by the triathlon bug aged 16 after finding it a perfect way to combine his passions for swimming and running without having to lose one of them in order to specialise. He quickly developed a reputation as a fast emerging talent and was handed a scholarship to develop at the High Performance Centre in Madrid where his training reached new highs.

In 2010 he was crowned Junior World Champion at the ITU Grand Final in Budapest and just two years later had a top finish at WTS level in Stockholm as well as a silver medal from the Under-23 World Championships in London.

Fernando made a switch in 2013 as he moved to Pontevedra to link up with coach Omar González. In 2015 the hard work really paid off as he secured three top ten finishes at WTS level, including a second place in London.

In 2016 he secured a first WTS win in Cape Town and made his Olympic debut after being selected for the Spanish team for Rio and finished 18th.

Fernando’s consistency was growing all the time. In 2018 he finished sixth in the WTS rankings, which included third place in Yokohama, and a year later he was fourth after a stunning run of results which included seven top-ten finishes.
