Super League can today reveal an all-star men’s line-up for the debut event of the SLT Arena Games.
Jonny Brownlee, Richard Murray and Jonas Schomburg will be joined by French stars Anthony Pujades and Pierre Le Corre, Australia’s Aaron Royle, German Justus Nieschlag and Rotterdam’s home favourites Marco van der Stel and Donald Hillebregt.
There is still one more big name athlete who will be unveiled in a special announcement in the lead-up to the event with the women’s field to be revealed next week.
With uncertainty around just which type of athlete will thrive in the SLT Arena Games format, it is hard to call a favourite.
Brownlee with his two Olympic medals and Murray with a CV of impressive racing over many years are the standouts from the list, but there is a huge depth of talent and variety of different strengths on the startline.
Royle has proven his Zwift pedigree in recent times, Schomburg is an athlete coming of age, Le Corre has pushed Vincent Luis all the way in Championship Series races and Pujades and Niseschlag hope their strengths will fire them to glory in this unique new format.
Then there is unknown of how Dutch duo Van der Stel and Hillebregt will perform.
Rotterdam born Van der Stel certainly has hometown advantage and a strong racing pedigree to call upon. Hillebregt is desperate for a big result to really put himself on the map and to force his way into contention for the Netherlands mixed relay team for the rearranged Tokyo Olympics.
They both have strong motivation to go all out for glory and will want to be the underdogs who cause an upset for the big names in the field.
